Sylvaneth Warcry Warband

Few months ago, I have tried Warcry for the first time. As someone who liked (and played) Mordheim and who generally enjoys small-scale games, I was very interested in trying out Warcry ruleset. I built a small Tzeentch Arcanites warband (made entirely out of Tzaangors and Skyfires) and really enjoyed all of my games (espically my opponents complaining about the Skyfires :D). Since I have several armies for Age of Sigmar, I am really looking forward to building different warbands, especially now that new battletomes for each of the grand alliances have been published and each army got some (or many) new options.

So, yesterday I bought Sylvaneth Warcry set. I already have a big Sylvaneth army, but I wanted to create Sylvaneth warband with an alternative colour scheme (something I was considering fo some time now) and I also wanted another 3 Kurnoth Hunters with bows for my regular games of Age of Sigmar, so this box was perfect.

I like this set because it provides a lot of options for whatever you want to use it for - your regular army, or for your Warcry warband. Here's what you get inside:

  • 3 Kurnoth Hunters (with all available options - bows, swords, scythes)
  • 5 Tree-Revenants (that you can also build as Spite-Revenants)
  • Warcry unit and ability cards (not including new units and abilities available in the Warcry Order  Battletome)
  • Bases, tokens and assembly instructions

This box is a great choice both for expanding your existing Sylvaneth army, or for building an interesting Warcry warband. I'll start assembling the models week and during the holidays I will play a bit with the ideas for the new colour scheme.

Painting Varanguard

This year was pretty bad for me when it comes to painting. Due to lockdown, job change and much less spare time available (I became dad last year), I did not manage to paint as much as before. Spare time that I had, I spent mostly on working out (to stay in shape) and reading. The only model I have painted was Archaon (but I am very satisfied with how it turned out). Recently, I've manged to squeeze in some more time for painting, so I started slowly working on my Varanguard. The plan is to have two units of Varanguard for the 1500 point Everchosen list (with some Chaos Marauders horsemen as well). On the pictures below, you can see the leader of the first Varanguard unit.

I was worried about the colour scheme that I have chosen, because I was not sure about the combination of the red skin on the mount and the black armour with gold trim/details. In general, I don't like paiting black armour, but I definitely wanted to try that for this unit. I tried to separate all of the important details, as well as create contrast with the miniature base, to make miniature stand out. I really like the end result and cannot wait to finish the second model from the unit.

Necrons are here!

Some time ago (actually, about two years ago), my friend Aleksa gave me his Necrons as a gift - he wasnn't so invested in WH40K and he wanted to reduce the number of minis he had, so I ended up with a nice Necron force (made mostly out of models from Forgebane and Start Collecting sets). However, I was busy painting my other armies and so I kept delaying painting the Necrons. Since I have even less time for painting now, I decided to call people from Warbrush studio for help - they already painted some of my Khorne minis, so I knew their work was fantastic.

I wanted my Necrons to look like they have slept a long time on one of their tomb-worlds so I gave Dusan from Warbrush studio a few references ad we talked about what the final colour scheme should be. What he came up with can be seen on the pictures below. I can only say that I am very satisfied and  that the models look just like I have imagined them. Oh, and Dusan is also working on Necron models from the "Indomitus" set, so I really cannot wait to see the final result and put my army together!

Time to build my #IsolationArmy

Recently, people started building/painting Warhammer armies while under lockdown and they are sharing the pictures of those armies under the hashtag #IsolationArmy on Twitter (and probably on other social networks as well). My family is also affected by lockdown (which is very strict here in Serbia) and of course, I have a decent amount of models that I can paint or build in my spare time (which I have a lot less now and I have to prioritize activities carefully). But, few days ago I got a completely new army as a gift from my good friend Aleksa - and that army is Chaos Space Marines! I was very interested in collecting them and I also liked the new starter set a lot: models are looking great and they actually do some cool things (and there are large monstrosities involved). So, Aleksa bought me the starter set and I added Forgefiend on top of that (because who does not like Daemon Engines?). I also had one unit of Chaos Marines and a Chaos Lord from way before, so I actually now have enough models for a full battalion! I intend to keep this army small and use it for narrative games in the first place (I actually like Power Levels a lot). The only models I would really like to add in the future are Lord-Discordant and Daemon Prince (or two). Oh, and with Obliterators and Greater Possessed, I have more options for Kill Team now!
Isolation Army, here I come!

Archaon!

Archaon and Varanguard were models that I have been looking at for quite some time. They look really amazing, but they are also very expensive - and I already had several armies and not that much time to paint or play. So I decided to wait before I jump onto another expensive side-project.

And then, the Slaves of Darkness book was released. However, the book was not what I expected (and I expected something similar to Cities of Sigmar) and it was a bit underwhelming, at least for me - except for one thing: The Host of the Everchosen army. This was exactly the type of the army I wanted to play, revolving around Archaon and his elite warriors: models were great, the rules were cool and I loved the fluff.

I decided to build 1500 point army, containing Archaon, two units of Varanguard and something else to fill the remaining 100 points (probably Marauder horsemen, since I like the models). Varanguard and Marauder horsemen will also fit the Knights of the Empty Throne all-cavalry list that I had in mind (but more on that in some future posts).

So, I finally purchased Archaon and the Varanguard. As soon as Archaon arrived, I started assembling and painting. The first problem I had was how to fix the model to the base - there are only tiny connecting surfaces on Dorghar's tail. So, I decided to add some scenery to the base (I had some spare Azyrite ruins lying around) and then added pins that went from the ruins to Dorghar's tail.

After this was done, I could start painting the model. This is probably the most fun I had painting since I finished Alarielle, the Everqueen. Below is the final result.

Beasts of Choas - Converting Bestigors

As I already mentioned in one of my older posts, Beasts of Chaos were the army I was looking at for a long time (probably since I discovered Warhammer in the late 90s). However, because of various reasons (and other games I played) I started collecting them only recently.

Since I mostly play 1000 point casual games with my friends, I decided to keep the army small, thematic and focus only on the models that I like the most ("prettiest Beastmen models" definitely sounds kinda strange). The plan was to build the most of the army from two Start Collecting sets and add a few exta things, like Doombull and Warhounds. However, I wanted to customize the army in some way and make it look "cool". The first thing I added was the Minotaur model from Zealot miniatures, that was already described here - it will make a great Doombull!

I also wasn't satisfied with the Beastigors. I like the concept (angry powerful Beastmen with big axes) but I'm not a fan of the poses. While searching for inspiration, I stumbled upon this page, where I saw a beatutiful Beastmen conversions - be sure to check it out, because this guy has is doing a fantastic job. Seeing JP's conversions inspired me a lot, so I decided to do something similar with my Bestigors - but I wanted MORE axes and spikes. So, I decided to order a lot of left and right arms from Blood Warriors set from eBay:

Then I started assembling the models. I am very satisfied with the end result - here are the pictures of my Bestigors:

Well, I like these Bestigors more than the original ones. I am now waiting on another set of Blood Warriors' arms, so I can convert the next unit. As soon as they are finished,  I'll post some pictures here.
